Diagnostic Services - Routine X-Rays
Discovered in 1895, x-rays are one of the primary diagnostic tools of medicine. Plain x-rays and most fluoroscopy have been combined to form what is commonly called Diagnostic Radiology. The most commonly performed x-ray is a Chest x-ray. X-rays of the skeleton, and various contrasted studies such as Myelograms, UGI, Venograms, Arthrograms, and IVP's are also examples of diagnostic studies.
Diagnostic services are provided at several locations:

Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is a radiology procedure that makes it possible to view internal organs. In most cases, it is necessary to use a contrast material before the test begins. This enhances the images so that a radiologist can evaluate the function and condition of the particular organ under observation. Complete instructions for the study are provided to the patient when the exam is scheduled.
Fluoroscopy testing is only provided at the hospital:

Computed Tomography (CT)
CT combines the principles of basic x-rays with advance computer technology to provide images of the internal body structure. CT scans provide a series of cross-sectional views of the region of the body to be imaged. CT scanning is sometimes done after drinking or injecting a contrast material which gives a better look at the different organs being studied. If needed, oral contrast is given to the patient in radiology one hour prior to the study. You will be made aware of this at time of scheduling.
CT Scans are provided at two different locations:

Mammography
A mammogram is a picture of the breasts used to detect abnormalities. Mammography Services are provided at these locations:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI's are an advanced, state of the art method, which produces very clear pictures, or images, of the human body without the use of X-Rays. The images are obtained using a very strong magnetic field and a radio-frequency pulse. Traditional and open scanning units are available to accommodate our patients.
GSH Imaging Center is uniquely equipped with two MRI scanners.
Our newest high field, non-claustrophobic scanner offers the best image quality available in Lebanon County, with the fastest scan times. This shorter cylinder scanner has a roomy feel, enhancing patient comfort.
Our "Open" scanner can also accommodate claustophobic patients as well as those patients who need more room than our new high-filed magnet can offer.

Ultrasound
Ultrasound images are made by using high-frequency sound waves. This non-invasive test is used to look at the soft tissues of the body. The sound waves are sent into the body from a scanning instrument, called a transducer, which is placed on the patient's skin. The second is reflected off structures inside the body and is analyzed by a computer to make a picture of these structures on a television screen.
Ultrasounds are provided at two different locations:

Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine is a subspecialty within the field of radiology. It comprises diagnostic examinations that result in images of body anatomy and function. The images are developed based on the detection of energy emitted from a radioactive substance given to the patient, either intravenously or by mouth. Generally, radiation to the patient is similar to that resulting from standard x-ray examinations.
