National Physical Therapy Month is being celebrated during October by the physical therapists at the Good Samaritan Health System. Physical therapy facilities are located at the Lebanon Valley Medical Plaza on Forge Road in Palmyra, and at the Quentin Circle Shopping Center in Lebanon. Each location is staffed by licensed, skilled clinicians who are able to individualize treatment plans for a variety of diagnoses. Some of the more common problems treated are joint pain, muscle spasm, tendonitis, weakness, deconditioning, joint replacement, stroke, walking and balance difficulties and various neurological problems.
One of the lesser known but greatly effective techniques that has gained increased popularity, especially in the world of sports, is kinesiotaping. The use of this product was highlighted throughout the 2008 Summer Olympics. Kinesiotape is an elastic tape that is similar to the weight and thickness of skin. It does not restrict joint movement and allows for full range of motion. The tape itself is water resistant and is made to stay on the body part for 3-5 days meaning bathing and perspiring does not negatively effect its application. Kinesiotape has many uses including treatment of pain, overuse conditions, muscle weakness, lymphatic edema and assisting with correction of joint problems. The desired treatment outcome will determine the specific application technique.
Knesiotape and a variety of techniques and equipment are used to improve the many conditions treated by physical therapists. Patients requiring therapy must be referred by a physician, however. For more information contact the physical therapy department at 270-8841.
