Free educational classes for diabetics are scheduled to be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July at the Hyman S. Caplan Pavilion. Diabetic educators from The Good Samaritan Hospital will conduct free classes to assist individuals with diabetes in controlling and coping with their disease.
Classes will be conducted on Tuesdays, July 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. and on Thursdays, July 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Participants may choose to attend either Tuesday or Thursday. All classes are held in the Rehab day room on the first floor of The Hyman S. Caplan Pavilion at Fourth and Willow streets.
Prospective participants should call 270-7927 to make an appointment to complete the necessary pre-assessment and registration forms. Medical histories will be taken as well as attitude and diabetes knowledge assessments. All four classes must be attended. A guest may attend classes with the registrant.
Topics to be presented and discussed include: diabetes, the disease; the importance of managing diabetes; meal planning using the exchange lists; restaurant eating and recipes; use of medication for control: insulin and oral agents; self-blood glucose monitoring; the effect of exercise, diet and medication control; measures to prevent complications; coping, and adjustments for sick days and travel.
