Good Samaritan Health System Cardiac & Vascular Center is the only comprehensive cardiovascular program in Lebanon. We’ve been honored with prestigious national recognitions like the American Heart Association’s “Get with the Guidelines” award and a three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
At Good Samaritan, we’re committed to providing our community and central Pennsylvania with the best in cardiovascular services—which is why we’ve brought world-class heart care right to your backyard.
Cardiac Services
Open Heart Surgery
These procedures can be frightening, but with our experienced and knowledgeable surgical team, you couldn’t be in better hands. Our team is trained in the latest techniques for a wide variety of surgeries, including off-pump coronary artery bypass, surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation, and abdominal aortic aneurysm stenting.
Valve Surgery
Valve surgery treats the heart valves, which regulate the direction and flow of blood through the heart. These procedures include:
• Mitral valve repair or replacement
• Placement of rings to support mitral valve
• Tricuspid valve repair
• Aortic valve replacement
Thoracic Surgery
Thoracic surgery treats diseases affecting the chest wall, lungs and mediastinum. These procedures include:
• Treatment of chest wall tumors
• Treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax
• Treatment of pleural effusion
• Surgery for lung cancer staging and resection
• Resection of lung for other diseases
We provide both traditional and minimally invasive techniques for our operative interventions.
Vascular Surgery
In order to provide comprehensive cardiovascular care, we also treat disorders of the circulatory system. Vascular procedures available include:
• Cartoid endarterectomy
• Peripheral artery bypass
• Resection of aneurysms of the aorta (AAA)
• Peripheral artery angioplasty
Interventional Cardiology
Get the best in diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular services in our cardiac catheterization lab. This lab consists of two digital procedure labs, a 12-bed prep/recovery area and a private waiting area. It’s staffed 24/7 and strives to keep all door-to-balloon times within the 90-minute benchmark. Interventional procedures include:
• Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)
• Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCI)
• Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)
• Rotablator
• Arthrectomy
Additional Units and Services at the Cardiac & Vascular Center
Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR)
The CVOR is a state-of-the-art two-room surgical suite. This unit incorporates sophisticated technology with an experienced and highly trained team of medical professionals, all dedicated to achieving the best possible patient outcomes.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
The ICU is a nine-bed unit that provides intensive care services by highly skilled and compassionate nursing personnel, utilizing a multi-disciplinary approach to individualize your care. This unit is located on the 2nd floor of the south wing.
Cardiovascular Unit (CVU)
The CVU is a nine-bed unit that cares for open heart patients from admission to discharge, following a process known as the “Cardiac Universal Bed.” Under this model, the patient is admitted immediately after surgery, recovering in one bed until they’re well enough to be sent home. The benefits include:
- Decreased length of stay due to enhanced patient care focus
- More effective monitoring, rapid identification and prompt resolution of post-operative complications
- Nurses who are able to detect subtle patient condition changes
- Optimal nurse-patient ratios that are adjusted for patient severity, not location
- Consistent nurse-patient assignments that promote better health education and earlier discharge preparation
In addition, the Cardiac Universal Bed model promotes a collaborative approach to treatment, resulting in far better patient outcomes and health.
Electrophysiology (EP) Lab
The EP lab studies the heart’s electrical activities and pathways, helping to diagnose and treat abnormal rhythms. Opened in June 2008, it features a dedicated EP team and the latest technology.
Telemetry - 3 South
3 South is a 32-bed telemetry unit that provides patients with continuous cardiac monitoring, essential to positive outcomes for patients with certain conditions. Serving a predominately adult and geriatric population, the types of diagnoses include, but are not limited to: ruling out myocardial infraction, congestive heart failure, angina, irregular heart rhythms, respiratory dysfunction, and valvular dysfunction.
Non-Invasive Cardiology Services (NICS)
At NICS, cardiovascular technicians provide a variety of diagnostic services, like 12 lead EKG, monitored stress testing, nuclear cardiac testing, EEG, ECHO, transesophageal ECHO, stress ECHO, and tilt table testing. Accredited in 2007 by the Intersocietal Commission for Echocardiography Labs, NICS serves in-house patients, physician offices, surgery centers and area hospitals.
Cardiac Rehabilitation Center
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Center offers inpatient and outpatient programs, including patient/family education, cardiac diagnosis support and bedside exercise for the open heart patient.
