Call Schedule/Work Hours

The call schedule for the GSH Inpatient and Obstetric Services is primarily covered by the Night Float resident.  Call for the remaining Friday and Saturday evenings is distributed among those residents not performing night float duties. First year residents share call with their class mates resulting in approximately 2 days of in-house call per month on average. First year residents are never on call alone and are always supervised by a senior (second or third year resident).

Senior call is divided among second and third year residents in a tiered system with second year residents taking more call than third year residents. Both second and third year residents take significantly fewer calls than first year residents. This system allows for third year residents to have more available time for job interviews and away rotations.
Two Family Medicine faculty members are scheduled for call each night covering obstetrics and medical call independently.
Several other rotations do have call as well. These rotations are mainly during the intern year and consist of inpatient pediatrics and trauma/emergency general surgery. In the second/third year of residency, a senior level OB/GYN rotation also has call once a week.
